To earn your rank as Eagle Scout – the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America – you must complete an extensive service project that demonstrates leadership and commitment to duty. As 17 year-old Kenny Senner was deciding what his service project would be, he remembered his great-grandmother.
Kenny had a special relationship with his great-grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He would often visit with her and her friends at the assisted living facility and he reflected on how much they appreciated his company.
When Kenny had the opportunity to meet with clients at the Aurora Adult Day Center, he realized how he could give back and support his service project: by creating a more welcoming environment in the center’s courtyard.
The Aurora Adult Day Center is a community-based adult day care program located near downtown Milwaukee, in a home that once stood as the original Milwaukee Hospital. The program provides a variety of health and social support services in a protective setting during daytime hours.
The Aurora Adult Day Center aims to reduce barriers associated with aging or disability, promotes good health and wellness and opportunities for seniors to engage in social interactions.
Kenny spent nearly 178 hours removing overgrown trees, replacing benches, building and installing upright planters, installing patio bricks, planting perennials and laying down wood chips. His completed project allowed for the clients to enjoy the beautified courtyard.
The clients were not only thrilled with the end result but were honored to be able to participate in the project. One client said, “I appreciated the opportunity to plant flowers. I’ve never planted flowers before and I discovered that it’s really something I like to do.”
