It's South Shore Frolic Time !

July 3, 2013

What time is it? It is once again South Shore Frolic time in Bay View's South Shore Park, July 12-13-14. Milwaukee's oldest and original free festival is under the auspices of the Bay View Lions Club for an 18th consecutive year.

A couple of changes have been made for this year's festival in addition to the well-publicized return of the Frolic parade which steps-off at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. First, the traditional "atomic" fireworks shows will be on Friday and Saturday nights at 10:00 p.m. this year instead of Saturday-Sunday night which had been the case since the Frolic began in1948. "We listened and responded to feedback and concerns from neighborhood residents," said Lyn Graziano, president of the Bay View Lions Club as the reason for breaking with the Frolic fireworks tradition. On Sunday night, there will still be a fireworks show, but it will be a fireworks "burst", a 5-10 minute show that will begin at appx. 9:20 p.m., about 40 minutes earlier than previous years. Second, will be the strict enforcement of the ban on carry-ins of beer and alcohol into South Shore Park during the Frolic plus the "no grilling" restriction anywhere in the park during the Frolic. "These regulations have actually always been in-place and will be enforced by the Milwaukee County Sheriff department," noted Graziano.

The Frolic parade will step-off from E. Smith St. and "S. KK" and proceed south on KK to S. Ellen St., northeast on Ellen to E. Nock St. and east on Nock to South Shore Park. Thanks to a generous grant from the WE Energies Foundation, plus donations from Bay View community organizations, dozens of businesses and individuals, the parade made a comeback with Bay View resident Patty Pritchard Thompson providing outstanding leadership and rallying the community.

The Frolic begins at 4:00 p.m. Friday with a fish fry (serving until 9:00), and music by Bay View's own Tom Trisco and his salute to Neil Young. At 6:00 Band X and the Boogie Men will take the stage until 10:00 at which time the first of two weekend "atomic" fireworks shows will take place. "We will blow-up the beach," laughed Graziano.

In addition to the parade on Saturday, the Frolic stage will feature another Bay View band, Playback, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. By popular demand , Cold Sweat and the Brew City Horns will perform from 6:00-10:00 and will be followed by another gigantic "atomic" fireworks show.

Sunday will feature a classic car show from 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. with over 75 vehicles anticipated. Music will run the spectrum from legendary Concertina Millie (noon-2:00), to the Dick Stan Trio (3:00-5:00) and 2012 WAMI nominee , Georgia Overdrive (6:00-10) with a small fireworks burst at 9:20.

Kohl's Wild Theater for children will take place at 2:00-3:00 on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons as well as FREE games for kids 4-10 years old on both days at 4:00-5:00.

For a 64th year the Frolic features music, fun, food, fireworks and families as its formula for putting "Bay View" and the Frolic on Milwaukee's entertainment map.
