Oak Creek girls basketball

Angela Rodriguez and Ashley Luke were named to the all-tournament team after helping the Knights to the title of the Ashwaubenon Holiday Classic on Dec. 28-29.

In the title game against Oshkosh West, Rodriguez was held to a season-low 10 points, but Luke had a season-best 19 and Maggie Wilke chipped in 11 as Oak Creek pulled out a 53-41 win to improve to 6-1 overall, as of Monday.

In the tournament opener against the host school the night before, Rodriguez had 16, Cydney Weisflog 13 and Luke 10 and the Knights turned up the defensive pressure in a 43-35 win.

It was the third time this season Oak Creek held an opponent to 35 or fewer points.

Franklin girls basketball

In desperate need of a win to snap a three-game losing streak, the Sabers answered with a season-high in points while posting an 88-49 win over Campbellsport in the second round of the Christine Rathke Memorial Tournament on Dec. 29.

Taylor Atkinson tallied a game-high 18 points, Diana Mantey had 14 and Cassidy Mihalko had 10 for the Sabers, who also got nine each from Nikki Dailey and Jenny Eickhorst and had 13 players score.

Franklin jumped out to a 24-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

That momentum continued on the third day of the tournament as the Sabers beat Kenosha Bradford, 52-48, by outscoring the Red Devils, 14-8, in the final quarter.

Dailey had a game-high 20 and Mariah Hill had a season-high 18 for the Sabers, who lost their tournament opener, 40-36, to Beaver Dam on Dec. 28, and began this week 4-5 overall.

Greendale girls basketball

Mary Merg's solid play led to a split for the Panthers at the Niki Doedens Holiday Classic in Cedarburg.

Merg had 14 points and Kelsey Pohlmann had a game-high 15 as the Panthers beat West Bend East, 43-40, Dec. 30.

Merg had a pair of 3-pointers for the Panthers, who outscored the Suns, 16-12, in the final period for the win.

Merg knocked down five 3s en route to a game-high 21 points one night earlier, but it was not enough as Greendale was outscored, 31-18, in the first half and lost, 51-41, to Plymouth.

No other Panther had more than six points that night.

Greendale began this week 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the Woodland Conference.

Whitnall girls basketball

Playing without injured starting point guard Lisa Donaldson, the Falcons struggled offensively and lost, 43-37, at Milwaukee Madison on Dec. 30.

Alyssa Moffatt had 12 points and Jocelyn Gillum eight for Whitnall. Tatiana Grant had 16 and Lisa Brown 14 for Madison, which held the Falcons to just nine first-half points.

Donaldson injured her leg in the first quarter of Whitnall's win over Greenfield on Dec. 18.

Franklin wrestling

Sam Kortes went 7-0 with one pin to highlight the Sabers' efforts at the Merrill Invitational, a dual meet tournament Dec. 28-29.

Kortes, Franklin's 119-pounder, sneaked out a 4-2 win over Mineral Point's Garrett Smart, Kortes' closest match of the tournament.

Sam Tyczkowski was also impressive for the Sabers. His six-win performance at 112 included four pins, three of which came in less than a minute.

Five Sabers picked up five wins: Dania Xiong (103 pounds), Colin DeClark (125), Chris Clapper (140), Adam Stelloh (145) and Kyle Smith (160).

Franklin went 5-2 over the two-day event with wins against Edgar (33-25), East Troy (51-13), Menomonie (59-12), Rhinelander (65-6) and Clintonville (60-6) and losses to Oconto Falls (42-15) and Mineral Point (30-25).

Oak Creek boys basketball

The Knights had two chances in the final two seconds to end their losing streak but neither shot fell in a 65-64 loss to Reedsburg at the Kettle Moraine Invitational on Dec. 30.

Danny Rajchel scored 20 points and Eli Aponte had a season-high 14 for the Knights, who nearly picked up the victory despite making just seven of 20 free throws.

Nick Stout added 11 points and Tyler Magyar had 10 for Oak Creek, which lost its fifth straight game entering this week and fell to 2-6 overall.

One night earlier in the first round of the tournament, Magyar had a season-high 16, Zemla had 12 and Devonte Coston had a season-best 10, but the Knights lost to the host school, 78-64.

Greendale boys basketball

The Panthers' scoring woes continued to mount in a pair of nonconference losses during the holiday break.

Visiting Milwaukee Riverside held Greendale to 20 points or less in each half en route to a 58-39 victory Dec. 29.

Jacob Merk and Andrew Scherwin scored 12 points each for Greendale, but 12 Riverside players scored, including Trinson White's 14.

Things got worse for the Panthers the next night at Delavan-Darien, where Greendale was overwhelmed, 54-35, and failed to have a player score more than six points.

Greendale entered this week with three straight games with 40 points or fewer and was 4-6 overall.
