Sports Wrapups: Dec. 17
Oak Creek wrestling
On the strength of their heaviest weights, the Knights improved to 2-0 in the Southeast Conference with a 38-21 win at Kenosha Bradford on Dec. 9.
Oak Creek won all five matches from 160 pounds on up, including the first five matches of the dual from 171 to 285 that gave the Knights a 22-0 lead they would never relinquish.
Mitch Dolan (171 pounds) and Kyle Wey (189) got things going with consecutive technical falls and Bryce Agg (215) and Mike Heard (285) followed with a pair of pins.
Seth LaBodda (112), Matt Blower (125), Matt Hampson (130), Jeremiah Butler (135) and Josh Regazzi (160) also picked up wins for the Knights.
At the Martlett Scramble at Menomonee Falls on Saturday, Blower, Butler and Wey earned individual titles.
Franklin gymnastics
The Franklin Combined gymnastics team, which includes athletes from Oak Creek, Franklin, Muskego and Whitnall, won the seven-team Emerald Classic in Waterford on Saturday.
Last year's WIAA Division 1 runner-up tallied a score of 139.775, well ahead of Burlington Combined's 135.775.
Franklin's Erin Honerlaw won the bars with a 9.0 and was fourth on beam with an 8.9. Sammie Olson was runner-up on bars (8.95).
Melanie Pearson was second on beam (9.0), third on floor (9.2) and second all-around (34.8); Becky Schultz was third on beam (8.925); Shannon Hein placed second on the floor (9.225); and Lauren Zurowski was fourth on the floor (9.1).
The co-op opened the season with a win at Waterford on Dec. 10. Olson won bars with a 9.025.
Whitnall boys basketball
A split of Woodland Conference games proved to the Falcons once again that balance supporting William Pelkofer's scoring exploits is the key to piling up victories.
Pelkofer scored a season-high 29 points, including 15 on five 3-pointers, in Whitnall's 68-57 win at Shorewood on Friday. Jake Lehmann (16 points) and Stephen Pelkofer (14) helped pick up the slack with a combined 30 points.
Three days earlier, however, Pelkofer scored a game-high 25 points, but no other Falcon had more than seven and Whitnall lost, 52-37, to visiting New Berlin West.
Chad Mathwig had 21 points and Jesse Riehle added 13 for the Vikings, considered among the favorites in the Woodland Conference Blue Division.
Whitnall began this week 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Woodland.
Franklin girls basketball
The Sabers were unkind to a former Southeast Conference rival on Dec. 8. Three days later, current SEC favorite Muskego turned the tables.
Franklin's Nikki Dailey had 17 points and Jenna Coenen and Katie Nord added 10 each as the Sabers beat host South Milwaukee, 63-44.
Franklin jumped out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead over the Rockets, who left the SEC this fall for a spot in the Woodland Conference.
At Muskego on Friday, the Sabers trailed, 50-23, after three quarters and lost, 60-44.
Muskego had three players with 14 points or more, led by Katie Ellerson's 18. No Franklin player reached double digits.
Greendale girls basketball
The Panthers began this week on a win one-lose one pace. Greendale improved to 2-0 on Tuesdays with a 42-39 comeback win at Cudahy on Dec. 8.
Mary Merg had 16 points and Kelsey Pohlmann added eight for the Panthers, who trailed, 34-27, after three quarters.
Greendale survived a 21-point effort from Taylor Gradinjan, which included five 3-pointers.
The Panthers (2-2 overall, 2-2 conference), however, were unable to maintain their momentum in a 54-40 loss to visiting New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday despite Merg's 14 points.
Nicole Bauman and Anna Hahn each had 16 points for the undefeated Lions (5-0).
Whitnall girls basketball
A win over one of the area's worst teams quickly extinguished the Falcons' modest two-game losing streak.
Whitnall beat visiting Shorewood, 61-22, Friday behind Rachel Serio's season-high 25 points.
The Greyhounds, who have lost 28 straight games, did not score in the second quarter and trailed, 37-4, at halftime.
Three nights earlier, the Falcons had trouble scoring in the first half and lost, 38-35, at New Berlin West.
Whitnall (2-2 overall, 2-2 conference) trailed, 29-7, entering the third quarter but rallied in the second half to make it interesting.
The Falcons' Amy Ford led all players with 13 points.
Oak Creek girls basketball
Samantha Logic scored half of her 18 points in the final 7 minutes and her 3-pointer with 4:40 to go gave Racine Case a 45-43 lead that the Eagles parlayed into a 62-54 victory over visiting Oak Creek on Friday.
Oak Creek's Angela Rodriguez had 28 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals for the Knights, who led by 15 at halftime.
Ashley Luke added 13 points for the Knights, who fell to 1-1 overall, entering this week.
Case's Jameeka Bouie finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Logic added eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Oak Creek boys basketball
Despite Nick Stout's game- and season-high 27 points, the Knights lost their Southeast Conference opener to visiting Racine Case, 79-74, on Friday.
Danny Rajchel had 13 points and Tyler Magyar 12 for the Knights. They each hit two 3-pointers, as did Tyler Zemla.
Case got 25 points from Jalen Riley and 21 from Mitchell Farr, including four 3s from each.
The game was tied at 52 after three quarters.
Oak Creek dipped to 2-2 overall, entering this week.
Oak Creek swimming
The Knights picked up four event wins but it was not enough to get past host Kenosha Bradford, 103-83, in a Southeast Conference dual Dec. 10.
Jake Wergin won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.12 seconds and teamed with Sam Vissers, Zack Kaestner and Evan Koch for a victory in the 400 free relay in 3:48.60.
Koch Kock also picked up a win in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.05 and Aaron Sova won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.86 for the Knights, who were second in seven of 12 events.
The Knights also placed second of six teams at the Cudahy Invitational on Dec. 5.
Greendale boys basketball
The Panthers' fast start to the season was slowed to a halt with a pair of Woodland Conference losses.
Greendale lost to visiting Cudahy, 50-41, on Dec. 8 and 51-45 at New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday to fall to 2-3 overall (as of Monday) after a 2-0 start.
The Panthers' Jacob Merk scored 18 points and Andrew Schwerin had 11 with nine rebounds and five blocked shots against Eisenhower, but no Panther reached double digits in the loss to Cudahy, where Greendale shot just 31 percent from the floor.
Franklin wrestling
Sam Kortes, Franklin's 125-pounder, was the team's only champion at the Battle of the Bay in Bay Port on Saturday.
Franklin finished seventh of 15 teams.
Greendale hockey
Konnar Wagner's second goal of the game less than 5 minutes into overtime snapped a 5-5 tie and gave the Germantown co-op a 6-5 win over the Greendale co-op at Wilson Park on Saturday.
Greendale's Brett Pokrzewinski scored in the 11th minute of the third period to tie the score and send it to overtime.
Pokrzewinski and Jake Hardin scored one goal each to give Greendale a 2-0 lead after one period, but Germantown scored four times in the second to take a 4-3 lead into the third.
Marques Surita and Ross Czarych also scored for Greendale, which also lost, 7-1, to defending state champion Arrowhead at the Mullett Center on Dec. 8 and began this week 2-4 overall.
Greendale/St. Thomas More wrestling
Tim Davis picked up two pins en route to an undefeated day at the Lakeside Lutheran Invitational on Saturday.
Davis, Greendale/St. Thomas More's 140-pounder, added two major decisions and one decision - the co-op's lone win in a 77-3 loss to Oostburg - to go 5-0.
AJ Sciano (215 pounds) went 4-1 for the co-op and Forrest Bedard (285) was 3-2.
The co-op (1-7) went 1-4 at the meet, including a 48-15 win over Princeton, the team's first victory of the season.
