Sports Wrapups: Nov. 9

Franklin swimming

The Sabers finished 16 points better than they did in 2008 and took seventh at the Kenosha Bradford Sectional on Saturday.

Franklin divers kicked off the meet well as freshman Melanie Pearson took sixth with a personal-best score of 282.74 points, good for sixth. Senior Jenna Renner was ninth with a 273.10.

Emily Nienhaus had a personal-best time in the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 28.97 seconds, which placed her sixth, and Angie Herrick was ninth in the same event in 2:38.93.

Jessica Zeman had strong swims in the 50 freestyle (26.45) and 100 butterfly (1:07.22), both ninth. Other top-10 finishers were Sarah Talbott in the 100 breaststroke (sixth, 1:17.80); Samatha Schermiester in the 500 free (10th, 5:55.65 (10th); and Courtney Owen in the 100 free (10th, 59.65).

Franklin boys volleyball

The Sabers fell short of their first state tournament appearance with a sectional final loss to New Berlin at Muskego on Nov. 5.

Steven Fons had 10 digs and John Jablonowski had 12 kills, but it was not enough as Franklin fell to New Berlin, 25-15, 26-24, 25-17.

The Sabers' Riley Stone had 23 assists as Franklin fell to 30-7.

Two days earlier, the Sabers needed five games to knock off Kenosha Bradford, 25-23, 19-25, 26-28, 26-24, 15-10, behind Jablonowski's 17 kills, Stone's 39 assists, Fons' 15 digs and Danny Kingstad's nine blocks.

Oak Creek swimming

The Knights turned in 10 personal-best times at Bradford on Saturday but were unable to advance anyone to this year's state meet.

Rachel Medenwaldt had Oak Creek's best finish, taking sixth in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.49. She was also eighth in the 200 free in 2:06.33 and joined Sydney Krimmer, Kaitlin McIntosh and Danielle Shandley for seventh in the 400 free relay in 4:09.54.

McIntosh was 10th in the 200 individual medley (2:39.63) as was Shandley in the 50 free (26.55) for the Knights, who were 11th of 14 teams.

Greendale swimming

The Panthers could muster only two top-10 swims as their season came to an end at the Division 2 Cudahy Sectional on Saturday.

Erin Connel finished seventh in the 100 freestyle in 57.02 and teamed with Taylor Jarmes, Kate Jungers and Anna Redovich for 10th in the 400 free relay in 4:11.38 for Greendale, which was 11th of 15 teams.
