Sports Wrapups: Sept. 24
The host New Berlin Eisenhower Lions forced a season-high six turnovers and limited the Greendale passing attack to 7-for-25 for 106 yards in a 28-0 win Friday.
The loss dropped the Panthers (3-1, 2-1) into a three-way tie for second place with Eisenhower and South Milwaukee. Whitnall remains atop the Woodland Black at 3-0 and 4-0 overall.
Greendale starting quarterback Ernie Valente (3 of 11, 43 yards, one interception) was replaced by Cordney Wren (4 of 14, 63 yards, four interceptions) late in the first half.
Eisenhower (3-1, 2-1) took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by senior Tyler Faber. Wideout Ian McKechnie added three scores. The senior scored on a 26-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Brian York before halftime, then capped the opening drive of the third quarter with a 33-yard run. York connected with McKechnie again on a 30-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Greendale will host South Milwaukee (3-1, 2-1) on Friday.
Franklin boys volleyball
The Sabers rebounded from a slow start to beat visiting Racine Horlick in four games Sept. 17.
After dropping the first game, 25-19, Franklin came back to win the next three: 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21.
Brandon Wiedenfeld, who made a key save of a ball going out of bounds in the second game with his team trailing, 20-19, went on a seven-point serving run to put the Sabers ahead, 24-17, in the decisive fourth game.
John Jablonowski tallied a team-high 28 kills for the Sabers, who also won the eight-team West Allis Central tournament on Saturday by defeating Kenosha Bradford, 21-16, 21-5, in the championship match.
Oak Creek swimming
The Knights turned in 17 personal-best times in 31 attempts and took second at the seven-team Port Washington Invite on Saturday.
Rachel Medenwaldt won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 25.99 seconds, edging West Allis's Anastasiya Dyedkova's 2:30.40.
The Knights were third in five events: Emily Malinowski, Jacki Wnuk, Rebecca Shandley and Carley Guzikowski in the 200 medley relay (2:13.5); Danielle Shandley in the 100 freestyle (59.35); Medenwaldt in the 500 free (5:43.05); Wnuk in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.14) and Danielle Shandley, Angela Fleischman, Sydney Krimmer and Medenwaldt in the 400 free relay (4:11.66).
The host school won with 557 points; Oak Creek had 460.
Whitnall soccer
Whitnall's Nikolai Miskov scored twice to lead the Falcons past the visiting Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks, 3-1, Sept. 14.
Greenfield scored first in the 20th minute on a breakaway from Jesus Cisneros. Whitnall tied it up on a shot from 25 yards out by defenseman Nathan Barnhart in the 62nd minute on a pass from Cole Davidson.
Eight minutes later Miskov, on a through ball from Stefan Filipovic, split the defense and put it past Greenfield's keeper to give Whitnall a 2-1 lead. In the 75th minute, it was again the combination of Filipovic to Miskov that put the game out of reach.
Two days later, the host Greendale Panthers scored in the 87th minute to snap a scoreless tie and send the Falcons (3-2 conference) home with a 1-0 overtime loss.
Greendale tennis
The Panthers clinched the Woodland Conference Black Division title with a 7-0 win over visiting South Milwaukee on Sept. 17, a victory that pushed Greendale's league record to 5-0.
The Panthers won each league dual, 7-0, meaning they are a combined 35-0 in league matches entering a league crossover match with Shorewood of the Blue Division on Thursday that will determine the league's overall champion.
In the win over South Milwaukee, Lauren Piotrowski won in straight sets at first singles as did the first doubles team of Emily Perinovic and Meghan McCormick.
The Panthers also beat Cedarburg, 4-3, in a nonconference match one day earlier.
Whitnall cross country
With five runners in the top 20, the Falcons boys edged runner-up Racine Horlick, 51-56, to win the 10-team Franklin Invite on Friday.
Whitnall's Jake Lehmann was third overall in 17:34, behind only Horlick's Johnny Binzak's 16:40 and Franklin's Tyler Jensen's 17:24. Whitnall's Mitch Olson was close behind in 17:41, good for sixth.
In another pack of runners, the Falcons' Rob Emmett was 11th in 17:51 and Eric Windt 12th in 17:54. Whitnall's Jack Kasprzak ran 19th in 18:24.
Dana Steffen's third-place effort in 15:36 and Lindsey Lent's 10th-place run of 16:29 led the Whitnall girls, who were third with 85 points.
Franklin soccer
Franklin's Kevin Clark's goal in the 70th minute tied the score and the Sabers and visiting Oak Creek Knights settled for a 1-1 Southeast Conference tie on Sept. 15.
Oak Creek took an early lead on Nick Tripoli's goal with Keenan Lampe's assist.
Franklin also picked up a 3-1, nonconference win over host Greendale on Saturday. Troy Dolan scored twice in the first 16 minutes to give the Sabers (9-2) a commanding two-goal halftime lead.
Greendale soccer
The Panthers did not score a lot of goals last week, but they scored just enough twice.
Greendale pulled out consecutive 1-0 overtime wins at Shorewood on Sept. 14, and at home over Whitnall on Sept. 16.
Mitchell Placek, with an assist by Jake Sisler, scored in the 97th minute to snap a scoreless tie in double overtime against Shorewood. Two days later, it was Placek again, this time with help from Ross Fieldbinder and this time a tad earlier. Placek's game-winner against Whitnall came in the 87th minute as Greendale improved to 3-2 in the Woodland Conference.
Franklin cross country
Lindsay Fons helped Franklin to second place, its best finish ever in its own invite Friday.
Fons was second in 15:29, behind only Oconomowoc's Mandy Prom (15:16). Oconomowoc edged Franklin, 56-65, for the title in the eighth-team event.
Hannah Timm (eighth, 16:13), Jenny Eickhorst (ninth, 16:20) and El Walman (18th, 17:11) also turned in solid times for the Sabers.
Tyler Jensen was second in the boys race in 17:24, leading the Sabers to third place of 10 teams. Franklin's Phillip Guilbault was fourth (17:38) and Derek McElroy ran 10th (17:49).
Franklin swimming
The Sabers' Jenna Renner and Melanie Pearson finished first and second in diving in a home dual meet with Racine Case on Sept. 15.
Renner tallied 151.85 points and Pearson 146.15 for Franklin, which fell to 0-2 in the Southeast Conference with a 117-69 loss.
Also taking second for the Sabers were Angie Herrick, Yonnie Zhang, Samantha Schermeister and Attalee Paremski in the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2 minutes, 34.66 seconds, Schermeister in the 200 free in 3:31.77, Jessica Zeman in the 50 free in 30.5 and Sarah Talbot in the 100 breaststroke in 1:31.81.
Oak Creek cross country
With three runners bunched in a tight pack, the Oak Creek boys placed 11th of 32 teams at the Angel Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.
Seth LaBodda, Tony Rodriguez and Ryan Clementz were within 16 seconds of each other and placed 36th, 73rd and 119th, respectively. LaBodda led the way in 17 minutes, 34.4 seconds.
Greendale girls volleyball
Greendale evened its league record at 2-2 with a pair of Woodland Conference victories, but neither came easily.
In a 25-9, 25-7, 22-25, 25-8 win at South Milwaukee on Sept. 17, Danielle Hotson had 22 digs and six aces and Andrea Waldera made four blocks to lead the Panthers' defense. Ashley Martison had 10 kills and Frankie Laguardia tallied a match-high 31 assists.
Laguardia had 42 assists for the Panthers two days earlier when Greendale needed five games to beat visiting Whitnall, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 15-13.
Whitnall girls volleyball
The Falcons pushed the host Greendale Panthers to the limit before falling in five games Sept. 15.
The host pulled out a 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 15-13 victory.
Whitnall's Kelly Ertl had 12 digs and four aces and Kristen Neuendorf blocked six shots in a losing effort.
At home against New Berlin Eisenhower two days later, the Falcons (1-4 conference) lost, 25-19, 26-24, 25-13, despite Brittney Brezgel's seven kills and four aces.
Greendale cross country
Three top-20 runs helped the Greendale girls take fifth at the eight-team Franklin Invite on Friday.
Haley Serketich led the Panthers in 16:31, good for 11th. Chelsey Heiden ran 14th in 16:51 and Lauren Clasen was 19th in 17:12.
For the Greendale boys, who were sixth of 10 teams, Kyle Goodman ran well in seventh (17:42).
