Sports Wrapups: Sept. 10

After taking a 17-16 halftime lead, the Sabers (1-1) gained a total of just nine yards on its first four possessions of the second half and threw an interception on its fifth.

That resulted in a 46-17 nonconference home loss to Milwaukee Marquette (2-0), one of the state's best Division 1 teams, Friday.

A 21-yard field goal by Tyler Woloszyk gave Marquette a 19-17 lead with 6 minutes, 51 seconds left in the third quarter and Brock LaFace's second rushing touchdown, a 36-yard run, gave his team a 26-17 lead later in the quarter.

Marquette added three touchdowns on plays of 48 yards or more in the fourth quarter against the Sabers, who open Southeast Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday against visiting Muskego.

Whitnall cross country

The Falcons boys and girls won their halves of the Southeastern Invitational at Sheridan Park in Cudahy on Saturday.

The girls scored 46 points to second-place Milwaukee King's 50. Whitnall's Dana Steffen was second in 15 minutes, 18 seconds.

The boys won with 48 points.

Greendale soccer

Greendale rebounded from a 3-0 home loss in the league opener to New Berlin Eisenhower on Aug. 31 to beat the host St. Thomas More Cavaliers, 2-0, Sept. 2.

After Ross Fieldbinder assisted David Jordan in the ninth minute, Fieldbinder scored a goal of his own in the 44th minute on Mitchell Placek's assist.

Greendale goal keeper Nick Kubczak made eight saves.

In the third-place game of the Sam Beres Classic at Catholic Memorial on Saturday, Fieldbinder scored twice in the Panthers' 3-0 win over Milwaukee Hamilton.

Oak Creek soccer

Thanks largely to Miguel Gutierrez, the Knights remained unbeaten by starting the Southeast Conference season with a 7-0 home win over the visiting Racine Case Eagles on Sept. 1.

Gutierrez scored four of the Knights' five first-half goals. He scored three times within the first 22 minutes of the match.

Roberto Valdivia and Nick Tripoli had three assists each and Evan Brunn scored a pair of goals for Oak Creek, which began this week 6-0 overall.

Whitnall swimming

Kate Schubert and Sarah Arteaga won a pair of individual events to account for four of the Falcons' six wins as Whitnall defeated the visiting Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks, 99-66, in the Woodland Conference opener Sept. 2.

Schubert won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.99 and the 100 butterfly in 1:01.63, and Arteaga claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:24.56 and the 100 free in 1:00.75.

Arteaga was also on the winning 200 medley relay (2:13.38).

Laura Sullivan posted a win for the Falcons in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.31).

Whitnall soccer

The Falcons made an early Woodland Conference statement by posting back-to-back one-goal victories in their first two league matches.

In a 1-0 win over visiting Brown Deer on Aug. 31, Paul Craig tallied the match's loan goal in the 29th minute.

Two days later at Pewaukee, the Falcons rebounded from a 1-0 deficit with two late goals in a 2-1 victory. Craig tied the score in the 73rd minute, and Quinn Dombrowski followed with a penalty kick two minutes later.

The Falcons lost a nonconference match at Wauwatosa East, 5-0, Friday.

Greendale tennis

The Panthers were perfect in league season-opening victories over visiting New Berlin Eisenhower and host Whitnall Sept. 1 and 3.

Greendale posted identical 7-0 wins.

Lauren Piotrowski, the Panthers' first singles player, and Greendale's top doubles team of Alyssa Brunelli and Chelsea Weber won in straight sets in both duals.

Franklin tennis

The Sabers kicked off the Southeast Conference season with a pair of league victories.

In both a 5-2 home win over Oak Creek on Sept. 1 and a 6-1 road victory over Racine Case on Sept. 2, the Sabers swept the four singles matches.

Against Oak Creek, second singles player Natsumi Shiotani needed three sets to win, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, and against Case, first singles player Liv Lampone pulled out a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Lauren Madson.

The Sabers improved to 7-2 overall with wins over Sun Prairie (6-1) and the host school (5-2) in the Watertown Triangular on Saturday.

Franklin soccer

The Muskego Warriors, one of the state's best teams, got three goals from Riley Weiner and won, 4-1, over the host Sabers in a battle of previously unbeaten teams Sept. 1.

Weiner scored twice in the first half as Muskego built a 2-0 lead before a Franklin penalty kick made it 2-1 in the 43rd minute. But the Warriors (6-0) answered with two more tallies against the Sabers, who began the season 6-0.

Oak Creek cross country

Three runners in the top 40 helped the Oak Creek boys take sixth at the 17-team Bulldog Invitational at McCarty Park in West Allis on Friday.

Seth LaBodda ran 23rd (17:27), Ryan Clementz 25th (17:29) and Tony Rodriguez 40th (17:57). The Knights were the only team in the top six that did not have a runner place in the top nine.

For the Oak Creek girls, Megan Gray ran 31st in 16:10; the Knights finished 15th.

Franklin cross country

Lindsay Fons' hot start continued at the Bulldog Invitational at McCarty Park on Friday.

Fons posted a 15:18 in taking sixth and helping the Sabers' girls to eighth of 18 teams. Franklin's Hannah Timm (16:10) and Jenny Eickhorst (16:15) ran 30th and 32nd, respectively.

Franklin's boys were seventh thanks to Phillip Guilbault's 18th-place run of 17:19 and Tyler Jensen's 27th-place effort of 17:30. Guilbault's time was a personal best, and he passed an estimated 35 to 40 runners over the final two minutes, according to Franklin boys coach Jerome Missiaen.
