Greendale cross country

Freshman Chelsea Heiden's turned in a strong debut to lead Greendale at the season-opening Franklin Quad on Aug. 26.

Heiden ran third in 17 minutes, 3 seconds to pace the third-place Panthers, who finished with 55 points. Greendale sophomore Hayley Serketich ran sixth in 17:21.

For boys, who were also third with 82 points, sophomore Garrett Patterson's seventh-place run in 18:43 was Greendale's only top-10 time.

Whitnall swimming

Whitnall's 400-yard medley relay of Kate Schubert, Sarah Arteaga, Samantha Wesel and Danika Johnson turned in the team's only win and helped the Falcons tie South Milwaukee for fourth at the 10-team Racine Park Panther Relays on Saturday.

The winning relay finished in 4 minutes, 23.60 seconds.

Three Whitnall relays took second: the 300 backstroke unit of Amanda Hill, Schubert, Rebecca Wiggington and Lauren Engel; the 300 butterfly relay of Samantha Mannisto, Wesel, Leah Jenk and Schubert; and the 300 breaststroke crew of Katherine Goebel, Laura Sullivan, Rebecca Powers and Arteaga.

Franklin cross country

Led by Lindsay Fons' course record of 16 minutes, 7 seconds, the Franklin girls ran second at its own quad Aug. 26.

Fons, who won the race for the second year in a row, ran the third-fastest time by a senior in school history.

Badger won the meet with 30 points. Franklin was runner-up with 37 despite a fourth-place effort by freshman Jenny Eickhorst (17:13) in her first-ever varsity race and a seventh-place run by sophomore Hannah Timm (17:27).

The Franklin boys were also second to Badger, 30-35, as juniors Phillip Guilbault (18:08) and Tyler Jensen (18:09) finished first and second individually. Derek McElroy ran fifth in 18:36.

Oak Creek soccer

Oak Creek won the Cudahy Classic with three wins Friday and Saturday.

The Knights posted a 2-0 victory over West Bend West in the title match after beating Milwaukee King, 5-1, and West Bend East, 3-1, in pool play.

Franklin soccer

Franklin (6-0) needed extra time to remain undefeated.

In the eighth minute of overtime, Alexander Huerta broke a 1-1 tie to give the Sabers a 2-1 win at Pewaukee on Aug. 27.

The Sabers' Antonio D'Amato scored late in the second half to tie the score.

In a 4-1 nonconference win over host Cudahy/St. Francis on Aug. 25, Franklin's Nick Glasenapp scored twice and Nathaniel Rocha and D'Amato had one goal each.

Franklin girls volleyball

The Sabers opened the 2009 season with a pair of tournament victories.

Franklin, featuring five new starters, went 4-0 with wins over South Milwaukee, St. Francis, Racine Lutheran and the host school at the Bay View Invitational on Aug. 26. Nikki Dailey had a strong all-around game with nine aces, 10 kills and a team-best 52 assists.

The next day at the Schneider Memorial Tournament in St. Francis, the Sabers posted four more wins, this time over Ozaukee, Cudahy, Shoreland Lutheran and St. Francis.

Daniela Sobic, who had 15 kills the night before, increased her tally to a team-high 23 at St. Francis. Chelsea Varilla reached double digits in aces (11), digs (11) and kills (18) and Dailey had team-highs in aces (12), assists (85) and blocks (tied with three) to go along with her 12 kills and 10 digs.

Greendale soccer

David Jordan's first-half goal in the 13th minute was all the Panthers needed in their 1-0 nonconference win over visiting Pius XI on Saturday.

Mitchell Placek assisted on the game-winner and Greendale goal keeper Nick Kubczak stopped all 12 of Pius' shots as the Panthers (3-2) handed the Popes (6-1) their first loss of the season.

In the Woodland Conference opener, the Panthers surrendered three second-half goals in an 11-minute span and lost to visiting New Berlin Eisenhower, 3-0, Monday.

Franklin tennis

The Sabers split a pair of duals at the Green Bay Southwest Invite held Aug. 24-25, and began conference play this week 3-2 overall.

Liv Lampone had a strong day for the Sabers. First, in Franklin's 5-2 loss to Green Bay Preble, she teamed with Kayla Plath to beat Mimi Nguyen and Taylor Weuve, state qualifiers a year ago, 6-2, 7-5. In Franklin's 5-2 win over West Bend East, Lampone posted her first singles win by downing West Bend East's top player, 6-3, 5-2.

Also against West Bend East, Elizabeth Brandes came back from a second singles first-set loss and a 2-5 deficit in the second set to win, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 10-5, and Nicole Thompson, a 6-3, 6-0 winner at fourth singles, won her first-ever singles match.
