Whitnall football signup scheduled for April 27

Whitnall football coach Rob Leboeuf and his staff will hold a mandatory sign-up meeting in the school cafeteria at 6 p.m. Monday, April 27.

The coaching staff will be introduced, and topics will include important summer and season dates, team rules, school policies and fundraising. The necessary paperwork to participate will be given out. Parents will be asked to provide e-mail addresses for contact.

If you are unable to attend, please e-mail Leboeuf at rleboeuf@whitnall.com to set up another arrangement.

OC seventh-grade girls take third in state invite

The Oak Creek girls seventh-grade select basketball team finished third with a 5-2 record in the 28-team Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in Wausau April 4 and 5.

The players are Martina Bilandzija, Kasey Cox, Katie Finn, Kayla Grant, Samantha Hunt, Lindsay Kalski, Mikayla Kenney, Haley Raddatz, Emma Schlei, Tamya Sims, Alex Widenski and Jaelen Wylie.

The team is coached by Brian Widenski, Tony Finn and Jay Kalski.

Franklin sets dates for girls basketball camps

Franklin will hold its girls basketball camps Monday through Wednesday, June 22 through 24, at Southwood Glen Elementary School.

The first session, for girls entering fifth and sixth grades, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. The second session, for girls entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.

Franklin boys basketball will run four camps

Franklin will hold four sessions of boys basketball camps this summer.

The camp for boys entering eight and ninth grades will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 13 through 16, at Southwood Glen Elementary School. The cost is $80.

The camp for boys entering sixth and seventh grades will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 27 through 30, at Southwood Glen. The cost is $80.

Boys entering first and second grades will have their camp from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3 through 6, at Country Dale Elementary School. The cost is $65.

The camp for boys entering third, fourth and fifth grades will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 10 through 13, at Southwood Glen. The cost is $80.

Franklin 'Batter-Up' dance scheduled for May 2

The ninth annual Batter-Up dance, sponsored by the Franklin High School baseball team, will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Root River Center, 7220 W. Rawson Ave., Franklin.

Proceeds from the dance, which will feature door prizes, raffles and a silent auction, benefit Franklin High School baseball. Tickets are $10 (which includes beverages and snacks) and may be purchased at the high school athletic office or at the door. The top door prize is $1,000. Individuals must be at least 21 years old to attend.

Greeendale's Mutranowski accepts volleyball scholarship

Morgan Mutranowski, a senior at Greendale High, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Dowling College in Long Island N.Y., on a volleyball scholarship.

Mutranowski was a four-year varsity starter for Greendale, a three-time all-Woodland Conference selection, the team's most valuable player in both her junior and senior seasons and the 2008 Woodland Conference Co-Player of the Year.

At the end of her senior year, she will have earned nine varsity letters in volleyball, track and basketball.

Franklin baseball signup will be held April 21

The Franklin High School baseball signup and organizational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the high school cafeteria.

Anyone in grades nine thorugh 12 interested in trying out is urged to attend.

Franklin legion baseball team looking for players

Franklin American Legion Post 192 is looking for varsity level high school baseball players for the 2009 summer season.

The team will play a 20-game season against southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois legionteams, ending with a regional tournament in Beloit, with possibility of advancing to the state tournament in Wisconsin Rapids and the national tournament.

Registration under way for OC basketball camp

Applications are being accepted for the 2009 Oak Creek Boys Summer Basketball Camp.

The camp will be held Tuesday, June 16, through Friday, June 19, and is for boys entering fifth through ninth grades. The cost is $50. Forms may be obtained at any school in the Oak Creek-Franklin School District or at intranet.oakcreek.k12.wi.us/default.aspx.

Oak Creek product Megna making impact at Wisconsin

Oak Creek High School graduate Tony Megna has made his presence known during spring practice with the University of Wisconsin football team.

Megna, a 6-foot, 202-pound junior linebacker in his sophomore season of eligibility, ranked fourth on the "great plays list" tracked by the coaches with 24 through action of April 11. He had seven quarterback sacks, two interceptions, one touchdown and many tackles for loss.

Megna appeared on the Badgers' kickoff and punt return teams against the University of Illinois on Oct. 25 of last season after seeing his first action as a Badger on kickoff, kickoff return and punt return units at Iowa on Oct. 18. He had one solo stop against the Hawkeyes. He was named UW's defensive scout-team player of the week against Ohio State on Oct. 4 and at Michigan on Sept. 27.

16U Competitors team seeks fast-pitch players

The Competitors 16U fast-pitch softball team has openings on its 2009 team.

The Competitors play in the Metro Milwaukee Fast-pitch Softball League and in five tournaments during the summer.They are looking for girls who play any position and are from any community in the metro Milwaukee area. Players who were 16 years old or younger on Jan. 1, 2009 are eligible.

Packers youth football camp to visit County Sports Complex

The Green Bay Packers Youth Football Camp, a week-long, non-contact day camp presenting football, athletic and life skills and fun, will be offered to children ages 6 through 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 13 through 17, at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex, 6000 W. Ryan Road, Franklin.

The camps are led by professional educators with supplemental instruction from former Green Bay Packers such as John Anderson, Johnnie Gray, Larry Krause, Dexter McNabb, Bryce Paup, Paul Rudzinski, Bill Schroeder and others.

SHAW team takes first in Baraboo hockey tourney

The Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin (SHAW) Pee Wee A Division team, based out of Wilson Park, won the Baraboo Pee Wee Invitational recently, defeating teams from Dubuque (Iowa), Stoughton and Baraboo.

Members of the team are Max Trevison, Dylan Lengell, Matthew Wargolet, JJ Hartung, Trevor Krogmann, Brady Kais, Philip Miron, Jarod Hauke, Travis Nerad, Nathan Erickson, Colin Wilson, Patrick O'Donnell, Derrick Oleson, Sarah Landkowski and Oskar Bjornstad. The team is coached by Mike Wargolet and assistants Todd Oleson and Tom Bjornstad.

Greendale's Zabkowicz playing hockey at St. Cloud

Greendale's Sam Zabkowicz is a member of the mens ice hockey team at St. Cloud (Minn.) State University.

Zabkowicz, a freshman defenseman, has three goals and eighth assists for the Huskies this season.Through 28 outings, St. Cloud State was 9-10-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and 14-12-2 overall.

Whitnall grad Ranta earns weekly award at Harvard

Harvard University diver Zac Ranta of Hales Corners, a 2007 graduate of Whitnall High School, was named Harvard COOP student-athlete of the week Jan. 5.

The sophomore won the one- and three-meter diving events and qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in the Crimson's 188-112 win over previously undefeated Navy on Jan. 3.

Ranta took first in the one-meter with 296.47 points and the three-meter with 349.51, outdistancing the second-place finisher by more than 80 points.

Ranta was the WIAA Division 2 state diving champion in 2007.

Registration in progress for three-on-three tourney

Registration has begun for the DJ's Court Tourney, a three-on-three, co-ed basketball tournament to benefit the Christine Rathke Memorial Fund.

The 16-team, double-elimination tourney will be played from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Franklin High School gym. The fee is $60 per team. Each teams is allowed one substitute for a total of four players.

The Southwest YMCA, 11311 W. Howard Ave., Greenfield, has formed a triathlon club to bring together athletes and assist in training for local triathlons.

This club is for YMCA members and costs $25 per year.

Members will receive a training packet with information about how to train with the YMCA and training tips from pro triathlete Lauren Jensen.

Club members range from first-timers to pro-level triathletes.
