Oak Creek girls swim
The Knights finished up their season on a positive note when they took 11th in the WIAA sectional meet at Kenosha Tremper in fall.
"We were very happy with the team's performance," said coach Kate Andreska. "The girls swam very well. Many of the girls swam their personal best times or came very close to their personal bests. It was a great meet to end the season. We will miss the seniors that have grown throughout their years on the team."
The Knights finished with 59 points in the 13-team meet as Badger/Big Foot won with 375.
The best place for Oak Creek was a seventh from the 400 free relay team of Kaitlin McIntosh, Lindsey Melotik, Amanda Marciniak and Angela Fleischman (4:05.86). The finals time was close to seven seconds better than the relay's seed time.
The 200 free relay team of Katherine Chitko, Ashley Heiges, Amy Seymour and McIntosh was 11th in 1:55.87 (season best by 2.5 seconds).
Other top-16 places included Ashley Hock, 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:12.45); Fleischman, 13th in the 50 free (27.14) and 11th in the 100 free (58.73); Jasmine Chen-Smith, 14th in diving (176.45 points); McIntosh, 16th in the 200 free (2:17.64); Melotik, 16th in the 100 breast stroke (1:21.36); and Marciniak, 16th in both the 100 butterfly (1:10.07) and 200 individual medley (2:37.55).
Seniors for the Knights included Sabrina Carli, Chitko, Fleischman, Crystal Knuth, McIntosh, Melotik, Seymour, Brittney Wiorek and Sara Zyhowski.
Franklin girls tennis
The Sabers, who recently finished a great season that included the Southeast Conference championship, recently passed out their team awards.
The Scholar-Athlete award went to Yuka Shiotani, who was also named MVP; while sportsmanship honors went to Eva Oklobdzija; most improved to Keara Thiele and the athletic director's award went to Ensley Gossett.
The team finished with a 16-11 dual meet record including such program firsts as winning a match against Brookfield Central (Shiotani), winning a match against Whitefish Bay (Gossett and Kat Donovan), making a sectional final (Gossett and Donovan), beating Kenosha Tremper in a dual (actually did it twice, at the Brookfield Central Invite and then in the SEC) and winning the SEC regular season and tournament titles.
Donovan and Gossett also beat a top eight seed at state (a pair from Wausau East). Qualifying two entries for state was also a first for Franklin.
The ambitious schedule included matches against Brookfield Central, Fond du Lac, Grafton, Kenosha St. Joseph, New Berlin Eisenhower, Nicolet, Pacelli and West Bend West.
The team will graduate 15 seniors this season including six from varsity, and the team finished with 46 total athletes.
"This season has proven to the girls that they can compete at a high level," said coach Jon Vogt, "and that we can have success if we believe. No one in human history had broken the four-minute mile until Roger Bannister did. After his accomplishment, many have accomplished the feat. It's not as if there was no effort involved, but belief was a huge part of our success. Hopefully this year will provide the basis for belief that next year's team can build upon."
