Experience to lead Franklin, Oak Creek tennis teams this spring
Senior-based squads boast good tourney finishes
Both the Oak Creek and Franklin boys tennis teams are off to sound starts this spring.
The Oak Creek Knights were impressive in winning their own tournament April 13 and 14 and then coming back to take fourth in the talent-laden Wauwatosa Invitational on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Franklin Sabers battled their way to second in the Waukesha South Invitational on Saturday. The teams took each other on in a Southeast Conference dual Tuesday.
Veteran Knights coach Don Tellefsen will have seven seniors on varsity this spring.
They include Victor Larrea-Buege at first singles, Jim Eaton and Trevor Iglinski at third doubles, Joey Lara at third singles, and Eric Chilson and Aaron Campbell at second doubles. Other varsity participants include senior Zack Kaestner, juniors Nathaniel Yost (second singles) and Luke Maurer, sophomore Mike Armanius and freshman Sam Hyatt.
In their own tournament, the Knights were impressive, defeating Hartford 6-1, Wisconsin Lutheran 6-1, South Milwaukee 7-0 and Wauwatosa West 5-2. Other teams involved were St. Francis, Pius XI, West Allis, Wisconsin Lutheran and New Berlin Eisenhower.
At Tosa, the Knights scored 28 points for their spot, as Waukesha West won with 47, Wauwatosa East finished second (36) and Oshkosh West finished third (32).
Armanius won the title at fourth singles while third-place finishes went to Larrea-Buege at first singles and the team of Eaton and Iglinski at third doubles and fourths were claimed by Yost at second singles, Lara at third singles and Campbell and Chilson at second doubles.
The Knights will take part in another tournament this weekend, hosting Kenosha St. Joseph and Brookfield Academy on Friday and traveling to South Milwaukee and St. Francis on Saturday.
Franklin also will have a senior-dominated group; eight Sabers have been with the team for four years, according to coach Gail Champion. They are Evan Bauer, Eric Christopherson, Kyle Hoffmann, Logan Myers, Steven Fons, Nick Mihalyi, Nick Trudell and Ty Kluesner.
Others on the varsity are juniors Manny Gumina, Eric Bauer and Austin Bohn and sophomore Jack Gumina.
Evan Bauer, Christopherson, Manny Gumina and Jack Gumina man the first four singles slots while the others are handling doubles.
New to the coaching staff this season is girls varsity coach Jon Vogt, who will be coaching the boys junior varsity.
"They are a very hard-working competitive group of young men," Champion said. "We hope to be competitive in every match that we play in. Kyle Hoffmann got through two rounds at the state tournament last year with partner Steven Petershack (who has graduated)."
Champion was very happy with the finish at Waukesha South on Saturday as state power Whitefish Bay won the meet.
In the top two singles spots, Evan Bauer and Christopherson each took fourth, respectively. Manny Gumina took third at third singles by winning a super-tiebreaker, 10-6, against a Green Bay Southwest opponent. Jack Gumina earned the same spot at fourth singles.
Hoffmann and Eric Bauer had the highest individual finish, taking second at first doubles with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Bay in the finals. Myers and Bohn took third at second doubles, and Fons and Mihalyi claimed fifth at third doubles.
The Sabers will now host Racine Horlick on Thursday at the Village Club and take part in the Greendale Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
