Sikh Temple shooting first-responding officers to receive Congressional Badge of Bravery

Lt. Brian Murphy and Officer Savan Lenda to be recognized

Aug. 1, 2014

Oak Creek — For their roles during the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin shooting two years ago, Lt. Brian Murphy and Officer Savan "Sam" Lenda will be presented with the Congressional Badge of Bravery during a free and open to the public ceremony on Wednesday, August 6 at the Oak Creek Community Center, 8580 S. Howell Ave.

Murphy, who is now retired, endured 15 total gunshot wounds as the first-responding officer to the scene, where an active gunman, Wade Michael Page, had killed six temple members and fired at least six rounds at women and children who were hiding in the pantry area of the temple. Lenda was the second officer to arrive at the scene. He moved toward the gunman to move Page away from Murphy—actions that may have saved Murphy's life. Lenda then fired at and injured Page, who then collapsed to the ground before eventually taking his own life.

"It is felt that the actions of both Lieutenant Murphy and Officer Lenda saved an untold number of lives," according to a statement provided by the Office of Justice Programs.

In a statement released by the City of Oak Creek, Chief of Police John Edwards said: "(Murphy) and (Lenda) are very deserving of the Congressional Badge of Bravery. Their actions on August 5, 2012 exemplify courage and bravery and should be a model for all officers to follow. I am extremely proud of not only (Murphy) and (Lenda), but all of the officers that responded on that day. They came together as a team and handled an extremely difficult situation."

The award celebration is scheduled for 2 p.m.
