Scaffidi chosen citizen of the year

Stephen Scaffidi has been selected as the city's 2009 Citizen of the Year, the Oak Creek Community Center announced last week.

Scaffidi was chosen by a selection committee based on his community involvement and accomplishments.

He is the cofounder of the Oak Creek Alumni Club and serves on the Knights Stadium Fund Committee, Oak Creek Community Development Authority and Board of Zoning/Housing Appeals, and as a Community Center board member.

Scaffidi, who is a candidate in Oak Creek's 3rd District aldermanic race, will be honored at a recognition dinner on Sunday, June 14, at the Community Center, 8580 S. Howell Ave. Tickets for the event will go on sale in April.

Write-in candidate to run in 5th District

Oak Creek resident Paul Veres is running as a write-in candidate in the city's 5th District aldermanic race.

Veres, who resides at 10777 S. Jessica Drive, submitted his write-in candidacy paperwork March 20, the city clerk's office confirmed.

He will face Dawn F. Leys and Kenneth A. Gehl in the April 7 election. The seat is held Dimity Grabowski, who is giving up the post to run for mayor.

Absentee ballots available for general election

Oak Creek residents can cast their votes for the spring general election via absentee ballot through Monday, April 6, at City Hall, 8640 S. Howell Ave.

In order to vote by absentee ballot, residents must be registered voters and submit an application, which is available in the city clerk's office. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Applications also can be obtained by submitting a written request to the city clerk's office. Written requests must include the voter's name, residential address and mailing address (if applicable), the election for which the ballot is required, status as a military voter (if applicable), declaration that he/she meets voter requirements, and a signature and date.

Mailed requests must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday, April 2. The deadline to vote by absentee ballot in the city clerk's office is 5 p.m. Monday, April 6.
