Auxiliary holds second annual benefit dance

Greendale - American Legion Auxiliary Unit 416 will hold its second annual Sweetheart Benefit Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 15 at Greendale American Legion Post 416, 6351 W. Grange Ave.

Music from the '40s to today will be played. Free beer, soda and snacks as well as door prizes and raffles will be available. Attendees are encouraged to dress from the era or wear a uniform.

Tickets are $15. Proceeds will benefit female veterans.

Homebound Delivery Service is available for Hales Corners residents who lives at home and are physically unable to come to the library. The service is free.

Church hosts blood drive

Franklin - St. Martin of Tours Parish, 7963 S. 116th St., will host a blood drive from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the school gym.

Non-members are welcome. Walk-ins are accepted. A donor card or photo ID is required.

Library hosts Getting Started computer classes

Hales Corners - The Public Library, 5885 S. 116th St., will host Getting Started computer classes.

Adult Services librarian Lori Kreis will lead classes from 8:45 to 10 a.m. March 8, 15, 21 and 22.

On March 8, participants will learn about the CountyCat system and Overdrive (for ebooks).

On March 15, participants will learn about email.

On March 21, participants will learn about the Internet with an introduction to Facebook.

On March 22, participants will get a practice session.

Registration is required. Basic computer skills are necessary. A refundable $5 signup fee will be charged. Fee is refundable upon attending the class or cancelling with at least two days' notice.

Party proceeds benefit Aicardi Syndrome Foundation

Oak Creek - The Aicardi Syndrome Foundation will hold a fundraising event, the Aicardi Party, from 7 to 10 p.m. March 9 at the Community Center, 8580 S. Howell Ave. Aicardi Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder.

The event features beer and wine tasting, door prizes, live and silent auctions, hors d'oeuvres, cash bar and music. The silent auction ends at 10:15 p.m., with auction item pick up beginning at 10:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The event is open to the public, but attendees must be 21 or older to participate in the wine and beer tasting.

All money raised at the event will go to the Aicardi Syndrome Foundation.

Library holds children's items consignment sale

Franklin - Friends of the Franklin Public Library will hold a children's items consignment sale from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m. April 20 at the library, 9151 W. Loomis Road, and in the City Hall Community Room, 9229 W. Loomis Road.

During the first half of the event, items will be full price. A half-price sale will be held in the afternoon.

The sale will include all children's items: clothing from infant to size 20, including junior sizes; outerwear and accessories; shoes/boots; costumes/dress-up; maternity items; furniture; toys; games; outdoor/sports equipment and car seats/strollers.

The sale will benefit the children's and young adults' area of the library.

Accordion club members perform at open mic

Franklin - The Milwaukee Accordion Club will hold an open mic night highlighting the varying talent levels of the club's membership from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 28 at Root River Center, 7220 W. Rawson Ave.

A club meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., and all are welcome.

Red Cross holds blood drive at middle school

Oak Creek - American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Jan. 29 at Oak Creek West Middle School, 8401 S. 13th St.

A blood donor card, driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Teens can play in snow, maybe, at library

Franklin - Theme of the Jan. 29 Teen Tuesday activity at the Franklin Public Library, 9151 W. Loomis Road, will be "Snow Fun."

Teens are welcome to come to the library from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to make fun creations with snow in the outdoors. If there's no snow, they will make winter crafts.

MATC students provide free tax preparation help

Oak Creek - Taxpayers with a family income of $51,000 or less are eligible for free help preparing their basic personal income tax returns from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Feb. 2 to April 13, at Milwaukee Area Technical College's Oak Creek Campus, 6665 S. Howell Ave.

MATC accounting students provide the service in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). All returns are e-filed.

Participants should enter the atrium on the lower level of the A Building, next to the cafeteria, and bring wage and earnings statements (W-2 forms); bank interest statements (1099 forms); a copy of last year's income tax return; photo identification; receipts for property taxes paid; certificate for rent paid (signed by landlord); Social Security cards for all individuals to be listed on return; Social Security number or tax ID number for providers of child care; other relevant information about earnings and expenses; and bank routing number and account number (preferably using a canceled check) for deposit information.

Taxpayers filing a joint return must both be present when the returns are prepared.

MacDowell Club hosts free concert at local church

Hales Corners - The MacDowell Club of Milwaukee will present a free spring program, "Sacred and Spiritual," at 2 p.m. March 10 at St. Mary Catholic Faith Community, 9520 W. Forest Home Ave.

Registration is open for summer camps

Franklin - Registration is open for the Friends of Wehr Nature Center's 2013 Adventure Summer, Nature Detective and Kid Expeditions camps.

Programming is available for 3- to 5-year-olds with an adult, 6- to 8-year-olds and 9- to 12-year-olds. Camps are held throughout the summer at various times; the first program begins June 15, and the final program is held Aug. 7 and 8. The times vary with each program.

Hands-on discovery and nature hikes side-by-side with professional naturalists are a part of each program experience.

Before- and after-care are available for children attending the Nature Detective and Kid Expeditions camps.

Prices range from $20 for half-day programs up to $200 for full-day, week-long programs. Adventure Summer Camps are held at Ross Lodge in Whitnall Park, 6750 S. 92 St., and Wehr Nature Center, 9701 W. College Ave.
