Republic Airways to buy Midwest Airlines

By Tom Daykin of the Journal Sentinel

June 23, 2009 4:30 p.m. | Midwest Airlines Inc.'s name will remain, some of its jets will still have wide seats, and the carrier promises more nonstop routes from Milwaukee under the ownership of Republic Airways Holdings Inc. of Indianapolis.

Announced Tuesday, Republic's purchase of Midwest from TPG Capital, a Texas investment firm, would end 25 years of local control for the largest airline to fly out of Mitchell International Airport. The scope of the changes is underscored by the decision of longtime Midwest Chief Executive Officer Timothy Hoeksema to retire once the sale becomes final in four to six weeks.

Several Midwest passengers at Mitchell International Airport said the news did not surprise them.

"In its heyday, it was quite a treat to fly them," said Dick Tollefsen of Fox Point. "They're more like an ordinary airline now."

Although the vast majority of Midwest's 1,640 employees are expected to keep their jobs, there will be cuts, said Bryan Bedford, Republic CEO and future CEO of Midwest. Those will occur mainly among administrative and back-office employees who are doing work similar to that of their Republic counterparts, he said.

City caught off guard by 27th Street cost issue

By Lauren Furlong

June 17, 2009 4:31 p.m. | The Oak Creek Common Council on Tuesday postponed voting on a South 27th Street Corridor Plan agreement that, among other things, would have committed the city to spend $500,000 on enhanced lighting for the corridor.

At issue was a memorandum of understanding between the cities of Franklin and Oak Creek pertaining to the street's development. According to a state representative, approval of the memorandum would show the state's Department of Transportation that the cities are on board with development plans.

The city of Franklin approved the memorandum 6-0 on Tuesday, but Oak Creek alderman will instead consider the issue again during a special meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. June 29.

The reason for the hesitation? Oak Creek Mayor Dick Bolender and all six aldermen received the memorandum late Tuesday night and agreed they needed more time to review it prior to voting.

Bolender acknowledged he is concerned that the DOT is asking for a half million dollars after Oak Creek already adopted the resolution committing the city to pay 25 percent of the Interstate 94 Drexel Avenue interchange costs totaling $3.8 million.

Panel wants roundabouts on 27th Street

By MARK SCHAAF

June 11, 2009 5:32 a.m. | A 27th Street committee with representatives from Oak Creek and Franklin is urging the state Department of Transportation to install several roundabouts as part of future reconstruction scheduled for the road.

The roundabouts would not be installed until 2014 at the earliest. By that time, they will be more common and residents will be used to driving them, committee members said.

The committee on Wednesday heard from its consultant, engineering firm and infrastructure specialist HNTB Corp. about the advantages and disadvantages of roundabouts at busy intersections along 27th Street in Oak Creek and Franklin.

In areas such as safety, environmental impact and traffic flow, roundabouts are better than traditional intersections, HNTB officials argued. The cost of construction is about the same, while roundabouts would be cheaper over the long haul as utility costs are cut with no traffic signals.

The toughest part would be the public's acceptance of roundabouts, committee members acknowledged.

Oak Creek man asks court to vacate charge

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

June 08, 2009 2:40 p.m. | Oak Creek – A man who faces a $121,000 charge on his property tax bill is asking a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge to eliminate the charge.

Lawyers for Andrew Zielinski, 75, of Oak Creek, filed the action Friday. It will be heard by Circuit Judge David Hansher, who previously approved actions taken by the city to clear the property and impose the charge.

The charge is due to be imposed on the bill for the former junk yard property, 3840 E. Puetz Road, unless Zielinski pays the city by Aug. 1. He could face foreclosure if the charge is not paid.

No court date has been set on Zielinski's request.

'Skimming' device put on Oak Creek ATM

By John Diedrich of the Journal Sentinel

June 05, 2009 9:38 p.m. | A "skimming" device that records credit card information was put on Tri City bank ATM machine in Oak Creek, stealing information from 38 people, police say in court documents.

The Tri City customers' accounts were closed and it appears they were not ripped off, according to a search warrant filed in Milwaukee County court. ATM skimmers use small cameras to steal debit or credit card information.

An employee at the Tri City at 8770 S. Howell Ave. heard a bang on the ATM machine at 11:30 a.m. May 24 and saw on a camera that something was removed from the machine. Surveillance video showed the skimmer was put on May 23 by two men. They were driving a damaged Volkswagen Touareg with no license plate, the warrant said.

On May 29, a bank employee spotted a car matching the description and saw the driver cover up the ATM camera. Police arrested the man, who was alone. The other suspect is in Bulgaria, the suspect told police. The man has not been charged, according to on-line records.

Schumacher and Fischbach are the first Knights to advance to state since 2000 when the entire team qualified.
